The Progress Of Search Engine Optimization Over The Years

If you want to improve the quality or volume of traffic to your web site you need to look into search engine optimization (SEO) methods. There are organic or natural search results that are un-paid and then there is search engine marketing (SEM) is where you pay to have your site included in results. The higher a site appears in search results the more visitors it will have.

To optimize a web site, content is edited and HTML associations are made to increase the relevance to specific keywords. Search engines place barriers by indexing and you need to remove these barriers. SEO can target all the different search types including video, image, local and industry-specific search engines.

There is black hat SEO that degrades the relevance of search results. These methods include article spinning, keyword stuffing and link farms. Sites that use these techniques are search for by engines in order to remove them.

In the early days webmasters just needed to submit a URL, page address, to the different search engines. The engines would then send spiders to “crawl” the page to extract links to create indexes. As time went on site owners realized the value of visibility of having their pages having a high rank. This lead to some sites to just insert keywords into their content in order for their page to get a better result! Search engines had to adapt to look for sites that have relevant content in their search results.

Mathematical algorithms have been developed to rate the prominence of web pages. The Page Rank is the number calculated by an algorithm. PageRank estimates the chance that a page will be reached by a random search. A higher PageRank indicates the page is more likely to be reached by a random Internet surfer.

Search engines today try many methods to outwit the sites that attempt to manipulate the results of a search engine with link spamming, keyword stuffing and other methods. Search sites use undisclosed algorithms and look for as many as 200 different factors when a user initiates a query. Personalized search is overtaking the ranking system and may make ranking meaningless in the future.
